I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve always knew that social media was powerful, but never have I predicted that it would have such an impact as this.
If you haven’t heard of KONY 2012 by now, you should watch the video above, it’s 30 minutes long, but it’s earth-shattering, and it’ll change your life. Merely less than 24 hours after being posted, the video has gained millions of views, and has well eclipsed it’s original goal of 500,000 views.
KONY 2012, it speaks for itself. Over 60, 000 children in Uganda have been turned into child soldiers, sex slaves, manipulated by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army). This has happened for 25 years now, and it’s never been a major news story, never been well known around the world.
If I asked you to point out where Uganda was on a map, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t know where the country even was, yet, halfway across the world, children in Uganda walk miles everyday and take refuge to avoid capture by the evil Joseph Kony.
Joseph Kony. Who? Well, for starters, he was first on the ICC’s list of people first indicated for war crimes, (ahead of people such as Gaddafi, who was 24th). He’s been indicated for war crimes ever since 7 years ago, and still, the ICC has not located and captured him. It’s the unawareness of the public, such as this, that makes him evade capture for as long as this.
You see, if the public, and mainly the US government was more aware of the crimes committed by Kony, he would have been tried by now. But, Kony remains unknown, and even with the US government sending 100 troops to Uganda to help with the capture of Kony in October, the awareness remains very low, with only about less than 1% of the general public aware of who Kony is.
That’s where you, the people, come in.
Social media truly is a powerful tool to get things across, and today, I hope I’m doing just that. After watching the video, it really struck me how the Bin Ladens and the Gaddafis were captured and killed, yet, other warlords such as Kony still remain at large. He’s just as bad, if not worse, than all those other dictators.
I guess I’ve never really been as motivated to take action, and that’s what I want you to do.
This organization, Invisible Children, has remained relatively unknown for 8 years now. That’s about to change. Click on their link to buy a kit to support KONY 2012. (http://invisiblechildrenstore.myshopify.com/) I’ve never been much of a rebel, but I really think there are some things that are worth fighting for.
Nothing is more powerful than an idea. And I feel something truly big, truly groundbreaking will happen real soon…
